Just Like Us - Supporting LGBT+ Communities

Written by Dominic Arnall (CEO of JLU)
Just Like Us is the LGBT+ young people’s charity. We want all young people to know that being LGBT+ is something to be celebrated. This Pride month we are delighted to be partnering with JP's Originals, whose support will help LGBT+ young people across the UK to thrive. Growing up LGBT+ is still unacceptably tough. Just Like Us' independent research has found that 42% of LGBT+ school pupils have been bullied in the past year, double the number of non-LGBT+ pupils (21%) and only 58% of LGBT+ young people have felt safe at school on a daily basis in the past 12 months, compared to 73% of non-LGBT+ pupils. What's more, LGBT+ young people are twice as likely to be lonely, have depression and face anxiety than their non-LGBT+ peers.Founded in 2016, we work with schools and young people across the UK to change this through three programmes:
  • Ambassador Programme: We support LGBT+ 18 to 25 year olds to develop skills, use their voice and find community, increasing employability, empowerment and wellbeing. To date, our ambassadors have delivered talks championing equality in schools, directly benefiting 70,000+ pupils.
  • Pride Groups: We train school staff to set up Pride Groups where LGBT+ and ally pupils can meet, learn and get support.
  • School Diversity Week: We run the UK-wide celebration of LGBT+ equality in education, providing free school resources so all young people can learn that being LGBT+ is something to be celebrated. Our inclusive educational resources help make schools safer, happier and more welcoming places for all young people. Schools representing 2.8 million pupils have taken part to date.

We'd like to thank JP's originals, who this month are supporting Just Like Us through the donation of 10% of online sales, helping us to support even more LGBT+ young people across the UK to thrive.
